This drink arose from the need to prevent Malaria in the 18th century. Tonic water contains quinine which helps prevent Malaria. Unfortunately for those living back then, quinine is also very bitter tasting. Therefore Gin was added to the water to make it more drinkable.
The classic gin and tonic is still a popular drink today, as a quick walk through just about any night club prove. Another drink that was created to prevent illness is the Gimlet.
