What does the classic cocktail the Gimlet and the word "Limey" have in common? I'm glad you asked! Back in the 1800's sailors would get scurvy due to not consuming enough vitamin C during long voyages across the seas. Dr. Thomas Gimlett, a British naval surgeon knowing that limes contain vitamin C created the Gimlet not only as a tasty drink, but as a protection against scurvy.
Sailors of course love to drink, so his reasoning was why not create a drink that would protect them from scurvy? Protecting their livers was another matter. Hence British soldiers starting drinking Gimlets and the term "Limey" was created.
To create a Vodka Gimlet, simply replace the Gin with Vodka.
